Fernanda
has many experiences of being a migrant, she was born in Brazil into
a family of Spanish, Italian and Japanese lineages. Seventeen years
ago she left Brazil and moved to London, and then came to Iceland
five years ago. In
the song you hear Fernanda talking on the phone to her mother in
Brazil. A
term not easily translatable, the Brazilian expression ’saudade’
describes a sentiment that those living far away from their families
might relate to. // Fernanda
“Inspired
by the sound piece of Fernanda’s conversation with her mother, the
piece is dedicated to my newly deceased grandmother in the
Philippines, Lola Eva. Here she sings, words mostly undecipherable, a
love song.”
Melanie
Ubaldo (b. 1992, Philippines) is an Icelandic artist based in
Reykjavik. In Melanie's work image and text are inextricably linked,
where deconstructionist paintings incorporate text with graffiti like
vandalism oftentimes of her own crude experiences of others
preconceptions, thus exposing the power of immediate unreflected
judgment. She has taken part in various exhibitions locally and
abroad. Her work has since been acquired by the Reykjavik Museum for
the permanent collection. Melanie is also the co-founder of Lucky 3;
a collective of Icelandic artists of Filipino origins.
